The teaching chair on Normative and Policy Dilemmas in Multilateral Peace Operations studies the conditions for a successful, comprehensive approach to achieving sustainable human security. Prof. D.E.M. Verweij holds this teaching chair attached to the Radboud University's (in Nijmegen) Faculty of Management Sciences in Nijmegen.

Military practice is to prepare, facilitate and execute the range of duties assigned to the armed forces since the end of the Cold War. These duties include defending, protecting and championing peace, security and humanity. Today, military missions are also explicitly focussed on the reconstruction and close cooperation with national and international organisations that work on the administrative, social and economic reconstruction of areas in and recently emerged from conflict.

The way one is to go about defending, protecting and championing peace, security and humanity is not obvious. There is some friction. This friction manifests when military personnel, non-governmental organisations and other set out to work together. Nevertheless, ongoing operations show that all actors need one another in conflict areas. The comprehensive approach can only succeed when all parties are truly able to work together on human security.
