Commemoration of tragedy of Sinjar

06-08-2015

Last year many people in the Sinjar district of northern Iraq were killed and more than 300,000 people were displaced due to the attack of ISIS. Now, one year later many youth groups from Kulluna Muwatinun, a programme supported by Dutch peace organisation PAX, organised commemorations. In about 10 governorates they held sittings with candles, photo exhibitions and dialogue sessions.

The most significant event was held on Sunday August 2nd in front of the UN headquarters in Erbil. About 100 young people gathered in front of the UN and, while surrounded by a nearly equal number of police and army, recalled the tragedy and the impact of the catastrophe on the Yezidi community living in Iraq. They requested more support from the UN and the Iraqi authorities. A committee of four young people were received by the UN and spoke with Ms. Lise Grande, the Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI). They explained their work and presented their statement. Ms. Grande made a personal promise to deliver the statement to the security council and the office of Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon.

The commemoration received large media coverage with more than 10 TV channels present interviewing participants.
