On 5 and 6 March, people from around Europe will drive to Brussels to volunteer as refugee chauffeurs.
‘About 32,000 refugees in Greece have been promised relocation elsewhere in Europe, but so far these pledges have remained unfulfilled. Europe may have forgotten about these refugees, but Europeans haven’t,’ according to the website Let’s Bring Them Here, the organization behind the initiative. The goal is for the voluntary chauffeurs to go pick up the refugees.
The volunteers will arrive in Brussels when European leaders are in town. Those behind the campaign want to remind leaders of their promises to relocate the refugees. If the leaders fail to respond, the drivers plan to continue on to Greece to pick up refugees themselves. Two hundred drivers, from six countries, have volunteered. They will hold a car rally at the well-known Schuman Rotonde in the European Neighbourhood of Brussels.
