PAX congratulates Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad for winning this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.
In choosing these two impressive and courageous people, the Nobel Committee sends a powerful message condemning sexual violence and violence against women as a weapon of war.
PAX’s General Director Jan Gruiters says, “This year’s award is recognition and support for all women who are victims of sexual violence and who around the world stand up for their rights and for peace. The award is also a call to bring the perpetrators of sexual violence as a weapon of war to justice and to try them for war crimes.”
Dennis Mukwege has always emphasized that contributing to peace is a right and a task for everyone. Nadia Murad symbolizes the dignity and courage of victims of sexual violence who stand up for a peaceful and inclusive society in which the rights and dignity of women and minorities are guaranteed.
