PAX Reaction to the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States

November 9, 2016

The election of Donald Trump as president of the United States increases global insecurity and instability.

To date, it is unclear what Mr. Trump plans to do when it comes to foreign policy, but during military briefings he reportedly asked repeatedly why the US could not use its nuclear weapons. He has also said, “I love war”. He has said he will root out terrorists with bombs, and in doing so will seek out cooperation from Russian President Vladimir Putin and from Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Trump’s election will make US foreign policy unpredictable. The first victims are likely to be the environment, human rights and the citizens of Ukraine and Aleppo. But when he takes over the office of president, Mr. Trump will also discover that the complex political problems confronting the world cannot be ignored, and cannot be solved by the US alone or by military means.
