Yesterday the family of Syrian activist Basil Khartabil Safadi confirmed that he has been executed by the Syrian authorities in 2015.
Basil had been arrested on 15 March 2012. The family has had no news about him since he was moved from Adra prison on October 2015. Yesterday, the family got confirmation that Basil has been executed shortly after his disappearance. Basil is yet another talented young Syrian killed by the Assad regime because of his peaceful work to promote freedom.
PAX and 31 other Syrian and international organisations issued a statement today condemning the execution of Basil Khartabil Safadi. The organisations urge the Syrian authoroties to:
- Immediately disclose the circumstances of the execution of Bassel Khartabil;
- End extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearance, arbitrary arrests, and torture and other ill-treatment;
- Release all detainees in Syria held for peacefully exercising their legitimate rights to freedom of expression and association.
